| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the history of golf tees. Describes how to gauge the size of teeing areas needed for successful maintenance. Includes the recommendation by the National Golf Foundation that "tees should have 100 to 200 square feet of usable space for every 1,000 rounds of golf played annually" but points out the criticisms of this recommendation such as its lack of par value and number of holes consideration. Describes the development of an improved recommendation for tee sizes and driving range tees. Concludes that "since the very first day golf was played on grass tees, many superintendents have had to explain repeatedly why the center tend to go bald during the peak golfing season. When faced with such unpleasant duties, try using new math to solve an old problem." |
