Abstract/Contents:Discusses a field experiment to compare "three consecutive years of yard trimmings application with inorganic nitrogen applications and zero nitrogen as a control. States that the "objectives were to estimate nitrogen availability from directly applying yard trimmings - and effects on crop production, soil nutrients and organic matter levels." Concludes that "the yard trimmings used in this study supplied adequate nitrogen production and were also a source of potash and organic matter. No evidence of phytotoxicity was observed. Based on the results of this project, local farmers have begun using yard trimmings on a variety of crops, including corn, bulbs, rhubarb, squash and cabbage. Nitrogen availability varied with year and source of material, and is likely to vary more widely over a wider range of materials and seasons. Understanding the variability in yard trimmings and predicting nitrogen availability across a range of yard trimmings materials will be a key to developing an application rate protocol that meets crop needs without increasing the potential for nitrate leaching."
