Abstract/Contents:Since Oklahoma is in the transition zone for cool and warm season grasses, bermudagrass is subject to more stressful weather and diseases than bermudagrass grown farther south. However, tall fescue, a cool season, bunch-type grass, has the potential of providing green turf year round in Oklahoma. If adequately watered, tall fescue will remain green winter and summer, with new growth occurring in the spring and fall when temperatures varies from 60 to 80 degrees. Tall fescue adapts to a variety of soils; it is drought and wear tolerant. It is best suited for low matinenance areas that have moderate shade. Although Kentucky 31 is the standard cultivar, new improved cultivars (Falcon, Clemfine, Rebel, Olympic to name a few) could be worth the added cost of buying seed. Establishment rates of tall fescue is 8-10 lbs per 1000ft2 in the early fall. Spring planting is possible but requires additional water. Tall fescue should be mowed once or twice a week during peak periods of growth and never less than 2" in spring and 3" in summer. Water deep (4-6") and infrequently (once a week in summer). Fertilize every spring and fall at 1-1.5 actual lbs of N per 1000fts. Overseeding every few years is necessary due to thin out in turf. Overseed by working 1/4-1/8" grooves in the soil, followed by 3-5 lbs of seed per 1000 ft2.
