Abstract/Contents:"We investigated the metabolism of exogenously applied 6-benzyladenine to Zoysia matrella L. cv. Koraishiba. Zoysia plants which were grown in the phytotorn at 30 °C and natural daylength were applied 20 ppm of 6-benzyladenine, then after 24 hr they were washed away with water. Samples wich were collected at 0, 6 and 24 hr respectively after the end of treatment were extracted and subjected to ion-exchange column chromatography (Dowex 50W-X8) and paper chromatography as previously mentioned. The activity of cytokinin was detected with Amaranthus bioassay for each Rf strips of paper chromatogram. According to the detection of control, Zoysia plants contained naturally zeatin riboside and/or zeatin as the main cytokinin. At 6 hr after treatment, the activity of free base of 6-benzylladnine and/or its riboside were increased. At 24 hr, they were decreased and its glucoside was increased. These results suggested that first of all the exogenous 6-benxyladenine was metabolized to ribosyl 6-benzyladenine in part followed by glucosylation. From the results as mentioned above, if longevity of high level of free cytokinin to maintain greenness may be able to be expected by the frequent applications."
