| Abstract/Contents: | Four tall fescue cultivars--'Alta', 'Falcon', 'Rebel', 'Houndog'--were grown under a tree shade gradient and open sun. Turf characters including turf verdue by weight, tiller density, chlorophyll index and turf quality were examined at the University of California, Davis Campus. The test plot was bordered on one side by mature Chinese hackberry trees and surrounded on all sides by one story buildings. The degree of shading are presented at 100, 30, and 10 percent of full sunlight. Turf performance was evaluated in August of 1981, 1982, and 1983. The results indicated the following: 1)Among the 4 tall fescue cultivars, only 'Alta' showed inferior turf quality, 2)Shade reduced plant size more than plant density for the cultivars tested, 3)All 4 tall fescue cultivars provided a reasonable turf coverage under 10% tree shade, 4)No shade-related disease problems were observed in any of the cultivars tested. |
