| Abstract/Contents: | The interest is to know if soil differences play any part in determining the playing character of a wicket. Research by M.C.C. was to include producing pitches faster in pace and that did not help one type of bowler only. Field observation and experimental evidence are discussed. Groundsmen majority view is to get rid of earthworms from cricket squares. The report speaks of the need to consolidate the top of the square to about 4 inches in depth. The impact on pre-season rolling is pointed out. Experimental evidence included an assessment of soil strength and soil binding strength. By this they have to establish the precise significance of texture for soil strength. A laboratory test was developed for strength. The Adams, Stewart, Soil Binding test (A.S.S.B.) is introduced and discussed as a means for determining the strength. Controls of the test are: standardizing of sample size, wetting to standard moisture state, breakdown of aggregation, moulding, and drying. Additional factors are listed. |
