Abstract/Contents: | Discusses a recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court which upheld the patentability of plants and seed. States that "by upholding the validity of seed patents, the Court serves to assure us that the science of the genetic modification of plants will continue to advance. With seed companies able to protect their inventions, we expect the practice of genetic modification to rapidly expand beyond the limited scope of commodity crops and enter headlong into the realms of turf, forage, flowers and other seed segments." Concludes that "the validation of seed patenting is a win-win situation for all participants in the seed industry." |
