| Abstract/Contents: | The following represents the 3rd year of a 6 year study. Four commercially available and 12 advanced Zoysiagrass selections (Zoysia spp.) were established at the Texas A&M Turfgrass Field Laboratory. Of the 4 commercially available cultivars, FC13521 (Z. matrella) has ranked consistently high in seasonal turfgrass quality. Emerald (Z. tenuifolia X Z. japonica), and Meyer (Z. japonica), have ranked slightly lower. Midwest (Z. japonica) ranked the lowest, primarily due to lower density a yellow-green appearance, and poor mowing quality. During the late July-August period a disease attack caused leaf defoliation. This was primarily associated with the Emerald cultivar, although a slight amount was observed on FC13521. The disease has not yet been positively identified, but is thought to be related to the Helminthosporium disease complex. All four cultivars exhibited reasonably good growth and color during the extreme heat stress period of midsummer. The turfgrass quality, where temperature were over 100 degrees for more than 30 days proved to be very acceptable. Among the 12 advanced selections, 7 outperformed the commercially available cultivars in terms of seasonal turfgrass quality. A table comparing the seasonal turfgrass quality of the 4 commercially available cultivars is included. |
