Abstract/Contents:"As a contribution to protecting groundwater the Bavarian Institute for Viniculture and Horticulture in Veitshoechheim carried out a 10 year experiment near W√ľrzburg to test the extensivation of farmland in a groundwater protection area. The subject was inter alia the nitrogen balance of a seeded meadow with different mowing frequencies. Despite a relatively low nitrogen content in the soil after only a few years of the experimental period (5 kg N/ha/a to a depth of 90 cm), great quantities of nitrogen were continuously removed with the harvest (80-150 kg N/ha/a). This capacity to re-supply nitrogen cannot be connected to the mowing frequency, but is probably linked to the soil. The reduction in harvest quantity for plots with 5 cuts can be explained by plant composition. Nitrogen removal remains equally high at 2 cuts based on higher nitrogen content in the harvest material."
