Abstract/Contents:"Field studies were conducted in 1985 to evaluate how the concentration of active ingredient and surfactant in spray droplets of uniform size affected the phytotoxicity of glyphosate to quackgrass [Agropyron repens (L.) Beauv.]. Glyphosate was applied with controlled droplet application (CDA) units at 46.75 L/ha (5 GPA), 140.25 L/ha (15 GPA), and 420.75 L/ha (45 GPA). Both a technical grade of glyphosate (MON 0139-3, 41.0% isoproplyamine salt) and a commercially available formulatin of the isoproplyamine salt of glyphosate (Roundup) were used in these studies. A major difference between these two formulations of glyphosate is that the technical grade contains no surfactant, but the commercial formulation contains an undisclosed amount of a non-ionic surfactant. At a carrier volume of 46.75 L/ha, the technical grade of glyphosate was applied at 0.062, 0.187, and 0.56 kg/ha alond and in combination with the surfactant MON-0818 (the surfactant in the commercial glyphosate formulation) at 0.0417% (v/v). The 0.0147% surfactant concentration was that associated with a 0.062 kg/ha formulated glyphosate rate at the 46.75 L/ha spray volume. A commercial formulation of glyphosate was also applied at 0.062 and 0.56 kg/ha. At a carrier volume of 140.25 L/ha, the technical grade or the commercial formulation of glyphosate were applied at 0.187, 0.56, and 1.68 kg/a. The surfactant MON-0818 was used to obtain concentrations ranging from 0.0417 to 0.375% (v/v) in the spray solutions. At a carrier volume of 420.75 L/ha, the technical grade or the commercial formulation of glyphosate were applied at 0.56 and 5.4 kg/ha. MON-0818 was used to obtain concentrations ranging from 0.0147 to 0.375% (v/v) in the spray solutions. Visual ratings and quackgrass stand counts revealed that glyphosate applied at 0.56 kg/ha at a carrier volume of 46.75 or 140.25 L/ha was more effective in controlling quackgrass than when applied at a carrier volume of 420.75 L/ha. Increasing the surfactant concentration only slightly negated the loss in efficacy shown by the quackgrass plants treated at a carrier volume of 420.75 L/ha. However, when the glyphosate rate was increased to 5.04 kg/ha, the loss in efficacy previously exhibited by plants treated at a carrier volume of 420.75 L/ha was negated."
