Abstract/Contents:Profiles the Giants Ridge Golf Course in Giants Ridge, Minnesota which has gone from receiving scorn from environmentalists to receiving accolades. Describes how "the Giants Ridge now stands as a model for the entire country, a portrait of how to transform thousands of acres of sand, gravel, taconite, and iron-ore mining land into a wide-ranging recreational and revenue-producing resource." Details how Giants Ridge Golf Course preserved several species of plants such as boctrychium, the barren strawberry, the floating marsh marigold, and ancient red pines. Also discusses the course's innovative water system which captures "every inch of runoff water" to prevent pollution of nearby lakes. Details the construction of a second course, The Quarry Course, at a similarly challenging site a mile away.
