| Abstract/Contents: | Describes techniques for hiring and keeping qualified employees. States that "the hiring process is a two-way street. You are choosing an employee and the candidate is choosing an employer." Suggests giving the candidate a history of the business. Suggests employing fairness, honesty and openness when dealing with staff to create a good reputation as an employer. Describes the difference between job description and role descriptions, stating that "job descriptions...tend to focus on how tasks are accomplished...role descriptions can focus on competencies mastered or to be mastered." Discusses creating a clean, safe working environment for employees and the need for good communication. Explains that "top quality employees want to be well rounded. . .being exposed to new challenges results in growth and renewed enthusiasm." Suggests shifting accountability to employees, to increase "the chances that your staff will perform in a responsible manner." Describes being flexible with employee's lives outside of work. States that "it is important to understand that time-off from the normal workday may occasionally be required to tend to personal needs, such as taking a child to the doctor." Describes techniques for implementing ongoing training for employees, and mentoring of rookie employees. Suggests flattening the hierarchy of the workplace to create more of a team atmosphere. |
