| Abstract/Contents: | "Following the characteristics of various carrying layer variants, the bases of assessment for vegetation areas as laid down in DIN 18035, part 4 are examined in a field experiment under the special geological and climatic conditions of East Germany. It is especially the assessment of the granulation composition, the permeability and field capacity with a view to the development of the vegetation which is critically examined. The results are comparad [compared] with studied carried out on 18 sports grounds in Berlin (Pahlke 1987, Maasberg 1994). The functional capacity of the different substrata either in the field experiment or on the sports grounds chosen for comparison purposes, showed that the framework for assessment as laid down in DIN 18035, part 4 of vegetation areas immune against wear and tear is unnecessarily tight. Thus, even locally available sods which differ from the ruls [rules] may, when properly used, indeed permit a turf sod which possesses the necessary immunity against wear an [and] tear but requires, at the same time, lower construction and meintrnace [maintenance] costs." |
