Abstract/Contents:"Net CO2 exchange rates (CER) of selected crested wheatgrass lines were characterized for the temperature range: 0-40 C. The CER experiments were coordinated with studies on nonstructural carbohydrates in wheatgrass plants grown at warm and cold temperatures. Optimal CER (20-25 mg/dm2 h/hr) for growth chamber plants preconditioned at 20-25 C occurred near 20 C. However, when the leaf temperature was lowered to 10 C, CER values remained remarkably high (ca. 90% of optimal). Above 30 C, CER rapidly declined. A few hours above 40 C led to negative CER values. Cold-temperature preconditioned plants, high in fructans and sucrose, exhibited a CO2 evolution 'burst' when leaf temperatures were raised rapidly from 10 to 20 C. Plants preconditioned at warm temperatures did not show this response. CER in the 'Hycrest' variety grown in the field during winter were two-fold higher at leaf temperatures near 10 C than at 20 C when the soil temperatures were between 0-5 C. CER differences became less pronounces as the soil temperature was pre-warmed to 20 C."
