Abstract/Contents:"Water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) composition of the mature leaf blade and of the elongation zone of the emerging leaf blade of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and timothy (Phleum pratense L.) was studied while plants were in vegetative growth. Fractions of WSC were separated by thin layer chromatography. Hexoses, sucrose and fructans were the major carbohydrates found in all tissue, but fructan polymer length varied markedly. Wheat contained mostly short (degree of polymerization, DP, <10) fructans in both tissues. Tall fescue also contained predominanatly short fructans in the elongation zone, but mostly long (DP >10) fructans in the mature leaf blade. Timothy contained almost exclusively long fructans (DP > 10) in both tissues, indicating that fructans in the elongation zone, in contrast with wheat and tall fescue, are not important osmotica. The variation in fructan DP between tissues and among species suggests differences in fructan metabolism which may be related to ecological adaptation of species."
