| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the future of fumigation in pest management, since the deadline for 70% phaseout of methyl bromide use is in 8 months. Describes the "critical use" exemptions that will be granted. Discusses the possible use of hydrogen phosphide (phosphine) in fumigation, but cites the concerns of corrosion and pest resistance. Profiles Eco2Fume, which received full U. S. EPA registration in August 2000. Describes Dow AgroSciences' product ProFume, which should receive registration in 2002 and seems to have no corrosive effects. Discusses research being conducted on the use of carbon dioxide as a fumigant. Describes how heat might be used in a fumigant capacity. States that "current research looks promising, but more registrations and results are needed before the industry breaks away from the methyl bromide mainstay. Also discusses the use of methyl bromide in anthrax cleanup, the National Pest Management Association's website for fumigator information, and the methyl bromide phaseout schedule. |
