Abstract/Contents:Stresses that superintendents should be aware of the life cycles of white grubs and cutworms while trying to control them. States that "in particular, you need to know which stages of the insect are susceptible to control. . .when the insect is in that untouchable stage, you need to understand you have to wait until they come to the stage you can control them." Describes the life cycle of white grubs throughout the year, explaining that "by the later part of May or early June, grubs enter the pupa stage, emerging as adults about a week later and completing the cycle. . .[this] stage is basically untouchable." Discusses the damage white grubs do to turf, and the telltale sign of grub damage, which is a thinning of the sand. Discusses using nematodes as a method of biological control against white grubs and explains how nematodes exterminate the insects. Discusses the cutworm pest and the damage they can do to turf. Describes the life cycle of cutworms, explianing that "the adults arrive in the southern part of Canada usually between late May and late June. Females will land on the turf and lay their eggs." Discusses signs of cutworm infestations, stating that "evidence which might suggest a cutworm problem is present is damage to a green similar to ball marks."
