| Abstract/Contents: | The major types of winter injury are 1) desiccation; 2) direct low temperature; 3) low temperature disease and 4) traffic effects. Two diagnostic approaches can be utilized to assess the extent of winter injury. One includes colecting five to eight plugs from a suspected damaged area, then artificially induce greenup. This will indicate potential turf survival. The second approach includes removal of the outer dead sheaths, cutting a slice through the cron, and the examining the crown area with a 10X lens. White crown tissue indicates healthy meristematic areas. Brownish or black crown have experiences extensive low temperature injury. The symptoms of the four types of injuries followed by the cultural practices that minimize injury are listed. |
