Abstract/Contents:Due to bacterial wilt (Xanthomonas) on the greens at the TRW Golf Club in Ohio, the greens were converted to Penneagle bentgrass. The first step was to remove the diseased sod. The soil was then aerified to allow the methyl bromide gas used for fumigation to penetrate more easily and thoroughly. The fumigation process required 3 or 4 people every 40 minutes to help cover the fumigated surface with plastic. The fumigation process took about 1 1/2 days/55,000 ft2. The greens should remain covered for 48 hours. After completion of fthe fumigation process, a proper seedbed was created by dragging. Next 1 pound of N/1000 ft2 wqs applied in the form of a good started fertilizer dragged into the soil. The greens were seeded in 2 directions at the rate of 116/1000 ft2. The seed was treated with 1 pound of thirun/100 lbs of seed to help reduce any early diseases. Topdressing was applied and one more pound of N in the same starter form was added--no dragging. The greens were watered every hour for 3 minutes from 6 am to 6 pm for approx. 2 weeks. After 2 weeks, deeper, less frequent watering was needed. Mowing at 1/2" was started as soon as possible with mowing frequencies increased and cutting height lowered over the next 4-5 weeks. Also discussed are the problems with membership relations during this time.
