Abstract/Contents:The depth of turfgrass roots determine the volume of soil that serves as a water reservoir which is available for the plant use. An 'Olypmic' tall fescue turf was mowed weekly at 2 inches. Root densities were measured in 6 inch increments to a depth of 36 inches. The highest root density, 45 cm/cm3, occurred in the first 6 inches; root density dropped eventually to 4 cm/cm3 between a depth of 30-36 inches. When tensiometer readings at different depths was over 90 centibars, the turf was collected and fresh leaf area was measured. Results showed that when the soil moisture depletion reached 90 centibars at 6-12 inches deep, the fresh leaf area was reduced to 50 percent. From an 18-30 inches depth, fresh leaf area was reduced to 20 percent. 'Olympic' tall fescue recovered three weeks after the restoration of irrigation. These findings indicate that tall fescue, because of its deep root sustem, can withstand considerable periods of drought.
