Abstract/Contents: | In the spring, the turf grows rapidly; this growth can use much of the stored carbohydrates. The application of excess nitrogen fertilizer in the spring stimulates above ground growth that consumes the carbohydrates that would go into root development or that would be stored for use in summer stress periods. The result is a succulent, thin cell-walled plant that is less able to withstand drought, temperature or disease stresses. Standard recommendations for the cool-humid region range from 1-1.5 lbs of N per 1000 ft2 or 2 lbs in wet springs or sandy soils. Fall growth is not as rapid as spring growth. Soil temperatures will remain warm for an extended time into the fall. As the above ground growth slows, nearly all of the carbohydrates are available for storage or for root/rhizome spreading. Recommended rates are 1-1.5 lbs of N per 1000 ft2 after the last mowing (usually November). Granular urea is preferred because of the price and it has less burn potential. Sulfur coated urea and TBDU can also be used effectively. Use of methylene urea is questionable because of the lack of N release in cool soils. |
