| Abstract/Contents: | Turfgrasses take up nitrogen either as ammonium or nitrate. there is seldom a concentration of ammonium since it is converted by microorganisms in a process called 'nitrification'. This is a two-step process in which nitrite (NO2) is an intermediate. To prevent loss of applied N, nitrification inhibitors have been used to maintain inorganic N in the ammonia (NH4) stage. The inhibitors disrupt the ability of the microorganism Nitrosomonas to convert NH4 to nitrite (NO2). dicyandimaide (DCD or DIDIN), ridomil (Subdue), Turayole (Dwell) and N-Serve are chemicals classified as nitrification inhibitors. To be successful in turf situations, application rates must be increased which makes the use of nitrification inhibitors less cost effective. However, as the price of N fertilizers rise, the economic importance of efficient use of applied N increases. |
