| Abstract/Contents: | "Information on the extent and severity of poor drainage on sports turf, the type of drainage schemes being installed and the relative success of these in providing satisfactory playing conditions was obtained by sending questionnaires to the Football League clubs, local authorities and golf clubs. Thus, data was available for both fine and coarse turf of a high and more moderate quality. Problems associated with poor drainage were particularly severe on local authority pitches and on golf courses. Drainage schemes on local authority pitches tended to involve pipe drains and mole ploughing and on golf greens pipes and catchwater drains were the most popular techniques. It was only on the Football League grounds that slit drainage and soil amelioration techniques were used for the majority of schemes even though slit drainage was perceived to be the most satisfactory method on local authority pitches while on golf greens and top quality soccer off-site soil amelioration appeared to be the best." |
