| Abstract/Contents: | 1984 update of two tests to evaluate long-term quality of new and experimental varieties, including Festuca rubra subsp. rubra, Festuca rubra subsp. commtata, and F. ovina subsp. duriuscula in a Kentucky location. In test 1, established fall 1976, 10 varieties with 2 replications are evaluated for the ability of fine fescues to withstand encroachment. Percent seedheads of fine fescue vs. Poa pratensis were noted on 23 May, 1984, with Banner and C-26, SW having 81.7% and 73.3% fine fescue. An 8 year visual quality evaluation summary of results is given with C-26, SW, Jamestown, and Banner having the highest 8-year averages. Three lbs nitrogen/1000 ft2 were applied annually during fall and early winter, and a cutting height of 2" was maintained. Test 2, established 9/1983, and part of the National Fineleaf Fescue Variety Test, evaluates 48 experimental and commercial cultivars, seeded in 3 replications at the rate of 4.65 lb/1000 ft2, and with a cutting height of 1.5". Scaldis, ST-2, and Spartans had the highest 1984 visual quality evaluation (7 months) average. Percent ground cover and density are also given. |
