Abstract/Contents: Discusses the Stimp Meter device as a tool to measure ball speed. Considers the idea of putting green speed and its lack of definitiveness. Cites average ball roll on greens with listings of past tournaments. Details putting green speed in relation to pin placement, the architect, and variety in greens - good or bad. States that with pin placement "it makes a big difference how fast the green is as to whether a pin can be placed on a given slope." States that the architect in green planning should consider "placing the pin in a variety of locations and having a variety of areas where the green is flat and usefully level." Also states that for variety in greens the recommendation in tournament play is "a balanced selection right and left, front and back, hard and easy". Concludes with ideas about how to solve problems of putting green speed.
