| Abstract/Contents: | 1984 report of 3 tests at a Kentucky location to evaluate 9 bermudagrass cultivars: Guymon, Vamont, RS-1 (Quicksand), Midiron, U-3, London (Sel), NK 78098, Tufcoat, and Common. Test 1 updates a winterkill and quality study. A table gives % green-up on 5/22, % coverage on 6/21 and 7/13, texture, and establishment date. Guymon had best greenup but rated third in coverage and had very coarse texture. Vamont and RS-1 (Quicksand) rated second in greenup but had 100% coverage and medium texture. Common had poor performance with 1% greenup, 5% or less coverage, and coarse texture. Spring dead spot was not a serious problem in 1984. Two additional tests were established on 27 July, 1984 to evaluate rate of spread, using 4 sprigs (approx. 3" in length, mostly rhizomes or stolons) and 4, 4" plugs which were placed into a bare soil plot. Three replications of each were maintained with a 1" cutting height, fertilization with 1 1/2 lb of nitrogen/1000 ft2/month, and MSMA at 2 lb active ingredient for crabgrass control in August. Tables give results in average spread, measured on 20/Aug, 11/Sept, and 2/Oct, with Quicksand and London having the greatest average spread for both sprigs and plugs. |
