Abstract/Contents:Discusses the physical properties of water, specifically the polar nature of water molecules. Explains the physical property of cohesion in water. Discusses the causes of water repellency in soils, and the problems this can create. Describes common misperceptions about water repellency as well. Discusses how surfactants can be used to "overcome both the water repellent characteristics of hydrophobic soils and poor infiltration of water due to surface tension," a result of the cohesive tendency of water. Explains how the polarization of water molecules allows surfactants to work. Briefly discusses the differences possible between different surfactants and how these differences might affect performance.
