| Abstract/Contents: | Study to evaluate the residual effect of pre- and post-emergent herbicides (Ronstar, Betasan, Dacthal, Balan, Trimec and Embark) and fungicides (Cutless and Rubigan) on tall fescue renovation by dethatching or slit-seeding. "All chemicals were applied at label recommended rates to a Kentucky bluegrass turf on May 11, 1984. On May 13, the entire test area was treated with glyphosate to kill the existing turf. Weekly overseedings of Ky 31 tall fescue were then made on May 18 and 25, June 1 and 8, 1984." Tall fescue cover on 6/9, 6/19, 6/25, 8/7 and 12/14 and crabgrass cover on 6/25 are provided in tables."As expected, crabgrass greatly confounded this study. If the crabgrass was uncontrolled as in the check treatment, it competed seriously with tall fescue seedlings. Therefore, by the last evaluation date, all treatments had a tall fescue stand that was better than or equal to the check. In order to make a final evaluation, MSMA was applied on June 26 to kill the crabgrass. All four preemergence herbicides delayed establishment for 2-3 weeks after spraying. However, the final establishment was excellent. The study will be repeated in early spring 1984 in order to maintain a longer residual in colder soils." |
