Abstract/Contents:"Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of several new growth retardants. All treatments were applied in 675 L/ha at 152 kPa to 'Baron' Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) turf which was mown twice after 100% greenup. Mowing height was maintained at 3.8cm throughout the growing season. Treatments were applied 9 May, 1985. Injury to the turf was visually rated on a scale of 0 to 100, 0 being no injury to 6 being commercially acceptable turf. Vertical height and clipping weight were also measured. These growth parameters were taken every two weeks for 10 weeks. BAS 514-H (BASF Wyndotte) at rates of 0.65, 1.12, and 2.24 kg/ha did not perform well as a growth retardant. These treatments exhibited slight growth reduction (6 to 20%) of vertical growth (clipping weight) during the 4- and 6-wk period. BAS 514-H at 2.24 kg/ha suppressed (34%) seedheads of Kentucky bluegrass. Turf injury due to these treatments was not observed. CGA 131036 (Ciba-Geigy) at 0.025 and 0.040 kg/ha gave 33 to 55% growth reduction and only 14 to 34% seedhead reduction during the 2- to 4-wk period after treatment. Quality of the treated was acceptable. The application of CGA-41065 (Ciba-Geigy) at 1.12 kg/ha resulted only 210 to 30% growth reduction up to 6 wks after the application. This treatment had no effect on seedhead suppression of Kentucky bluegrass. Turf quality was not affected by this treatment. Treatment of amidochlor at 2.8 kg/ha gave 78% seedhead reducion and 47 to 80% growth reduction the 2- to 6-wk period. Mefluidide at 0.42 kg/ha provided maximum growth suppression (64 to 96%) during the 2- to 6-wk period. However, the seedhead suppression was only 55%. In general, effective seedhead suppression was not achieved with any treatments."
