| Abstract/Contents: | "A growth retardant for turfgrass to reduce growth and frequency of mowing without reducing aesthetic qualities of the turf could save labor and energy costs. Common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) turf was treated in late July of 1980 with split applications of an experimental growth retardant, BAS 106-00-W. No phytotoxic symptoms were seen as a result of use of the compound. Clipping weights, height measurements, and visual height ratings indicated that growth was inhibited in treated slants through the 1980 growing season. Some residual effects from 1980 applications could be seen in spring, 1981. In treated plots, bermudagrasss turned green more slowly, winter weeds were absent, and growth rate was reduced until June 1981. Effects were rate dependent with the higher rates giving more obvious growth reduction. No differences have been observed between treated and control plots in the six weeks following the first 1981 (early June) application. Environmental conditions may account for lessening effects of treatments in 1981 as compared to 1980." |
