Abstract/Contents:"Various rates of an experimental PGR, ACP 1900 (identity not revealed), alone and in combination with mefluidide and/or an unspecified herbicide were compared with recommended rates of mefluidide (420/ha) and amidochlor (2800 g/ha). These materials were sprayed April 26, 1985 on year-old monostands of Poa pratensis cv. 'Newport', 'Nassau', and 'Ram 1'; Lolium perenne cv. 'Cowboy', 'Manhattan', 'Palmer', and 'Premiere'; Festuca arundinacea cv. 'Adventure', 'Falcon', 'Jaguar', and 'Mustang'; F. rubra subsp. commutata cv. 'Jamestown', F. longifolia cv. 'Reliant'; and the mixture of Palmer and Jamestown. N rates of 25 and 100 kg/ha were superimposed earlier. Reliant was the earliest entry, seed heads beginning to emerge in unmowed checks 3 days after spraying. Cowboy was the earliest heading ryegrass, and Newport the earliest Kentucky bluegrass. Manhattan ryegrass was the latest of all grasses. Control of foliar height and seed stalks by PGR's was more difficult with earlier maturing grasses, and more certain with later maturing grasses. ACP-1900 at 62-427 g/ha caused some retardation of all grasses but not sufficient to be comparable to commercial standards. The same PGR in combination with mefluidide and/or an herbicide frequently resulted in better control of foliar height, seed head numbers, and seed stalk height without causing greater discoloration of turfgrass than commercial PGR's. High N grass of some cultivars was discolored less but this was not consistent. Effects on disease and crabgrass will also be specified."
