| Abstract/Contents: | "Annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) turf was treated with mefluidide at rates of 0.07, 0.14, and 0.21 kg ai/ha during April 1984 and then exposed to laboratory induced heat stress 66, 97, and 125 days following treatment. Plugs of whole plants with attached roots were subjected to stress by immersion in a water bath for 30 minutes at temperatures ranging from 40 to 49 d C. Recovery from stress was evaluated two weeks after stress exposure. Mefluidide did not enhance annual bluegrass stress tolerance even when excellent seedhead inhibition was achieved. Plant recovery from heat stress decreaed linearly as temperatures rose from 40 to 49 d C, with complete death occurring at the 49 d C exposure. Plants exposed to 40 or 43 d C did not exhibit visible discoloration due to heat stress. However, mean recovery weights of plants expose to 40 or 43 d C declined to 86% and 63%, respectively, of the nonstressed controls (27 d C) when averaged over all treatments and evaluation dates. These laboratory heat stress evaluations failed to confirm previous field observations that mefluidide application increased stress tolerance." |
