Abstract/Contents:"Kentucky bluegrass turf (Poa pratensis L.) infested with a mixture of large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.) and smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum Schreb. ex Muhl.) was treated with fenoxaprop, tridiphane and MSMA to evaluate the efficacy of these products when applied to crabgrass at various growth stages. Herbicide applications were made early-post (EP), middle-post (MP), or late-post (LP); when the crabgrass had 2 to 4 true leaves, 1 to 3 tillers, or 5 or more tillers, respectively. Visual evaluations of percent cover by crabgrass and turf injury were made periodically throughout the growing season beginning approximately four to six weeks after herbicide applications. No phytotoxicity to the turf was observed. Early-post applications of fenoxaprop at 0.36 lb ai/A, tridiphane at 2.0 lb ai/A, and MSMA at 2 lb ai/A, were equally effective, providing excellent control of crabgrass with some reinfestation occurring (See Table 1). At MP applications, tridiphane was less effective than fenoxaprop and MSMA which were equally effective. At LP applications, there were no significant differences between tridiphane at 2, fenoxaprop at 0.35, and MSMA at 2; however, there was a trend in the data which would rank the effectiveness as fenoxaprop >MSMA > tridiphane. Early applications of these materials in tank mixes with DCPA or sequential applications of tridiphane (1 + 1 lb ai/A) or fenoxaprop (0.18 + 0.18 lb ai/a) weeks apart resulted in season long crabgrass control and no turf phytotoxicity."
