Abstract/Contents:Discusses the increasing popularity among golfers of using pull-carts to carry their clubs while walking the golf course. Compares the design of pull carts and motorized golf carts, focusing in weight and weight distribution. Describes the typical turf damage caused by golf carts. Discusses the tendency of golfers to take pull-carts into parts of the course where they "would not normally drive golf carts" like tees, green fronts, edges of greens, and poorly drained areas of the course. Describes how "some courses have banned the use of pull-carts" despite "little evidence to support" claims of "greater soil compaction and turf damage" from pull-carts than from golf carts. Describes how many courses have dealt with the possibility of pull-carts causing turf damage by restricting their use, enforcing "the same rules for pull-carts as for motorized golf carts." Offers alternative strategies for managing pull-cart use on courses. States that "pull-carts have made the game more enjoyable for many golfers by allowing them to walk the course without the added exertion of carrying their clubs." Concludes that by employing the suggestions in this article and "encouraging golfers to walk the course more often, along with the possible use of a pull-cart, is better for the golfer's health, better for the course, and better for the game."
