Abstract/Contents: | Profiles the Garra de Leon golf course in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, focusing on its partnership with Audubon International. Describes how "environmental concerns were taken into consideration from the very beginning, when the course was under construction" and how the course is host to "more than 100 species of birds alone, in addition to resident howler monkeys, coatimundi (pizote), blue iguanas, and jaguars, among others." Explains that "native trees...are found throughout the course, and understory vegetation has been left in place, providing valuable corridors for wildlife to move throughout the course property." Describes how the course demonstrated environmental stewardship in the six areas of "Environmental Planning, Wildlife and Habitat Management, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, and Outreach and Education" to obtain cerification as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. Describes how the course has to deal with a six-month dry season making water conservation and irrigation efficiency serious concerns for course superintendent Don Johnson. Describes the outreach and education projects of the course, including the contruction of the Garra de Leon Nature Trail and plans for a second nature trail through a bordering mangrove wetland. |
