Abstract/Contents:"We assessed the sensitivity of a variety of amphibian species to some of the more commonly used insecticides and herbicides sprayed for pest control in Canadian forests and croplands. We exposed embryos and newly hatched tadpoles of 1 or more of the 5 anurans, Rana sylvatica, R. pipiens, R. clamitans, R. catesbeiana, and Bufo americanus, and newly hatched larvae of the salamander Ambystoma maculatum to low concentrations off 3 insecticides permethrin, fenvalerate, and fenibryos were unaffected by the experimental exposures, exhibiting the same high rate of hatching success and low rate of morphological abnormalities as the controls. However, newly hatched tadpoles were characteristically paralysed by the exposures, recovering gradually after termination of exposure periods. Concentration of pesticides at levels higher than those inducing paralysis often resulted in death of the tadpoles. Some species were consistently more sensitive to the exposures than were others. We concluded that aquatic stages of amphibians are generally comparable to fresh-water fish in their vulnerablity to exposure to low levels of pesticides."
