Abstract/Contents:Discusses the increased incidence of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in the United States. Explains a way to help people who suffer SCA, by administering "a defibrillation shock within 4 to 6 minutes following onset." Explains that "although it buys time, CPR will not ultimately save the life of someone in SCA." Discusses having defibrillation units on golf course properties, stating that "Plymouth [Country Club] has two AED units on the property - one in the pro shop and one in the clubhouse." Explains that "the AED interrupts the irregular rhythm with brief, powerful, electrical stimulation to the chest. This restores the heart's natural rhythm, and the flow of oxygenated blood returns to the brain." Discusses the window of survival during SCA and the survival chances if defillibration is administered within 10 minutes. Cites country clubs that have AEDs on the property, and the lives that have been saved as a result. Discusses the risks involved in AED, but states that "to date, there have been no known lawsuits against lay rescuers providing CPR as `Good Samaritan,' nor against any AED users." Explains the costs involved in having a defibrillator on the property. States that "Nationwide, there are approximately 4,000 clubs with AEDs, 1,500 of which are supplied by CardioReady and AvanTech."
