Abstract/Contents: | 1985 test to evaluate susceptibility of perennial ryegrass cultivars to leaf rust (Puccinia coronata). Forty-eight cultivars were sown Sep 20 82 near Lexington, KY. Cultivars were established in 4 X 6 ft plots replicated 3 times and arranged in a randomized complete block design. The turfgrass was grown on a Maury silt loam soil, maintained at 1 in. mowing height with clippings not removed, and was fertilized with 3 lb/1000 ft2 annually in the fall. The plots were not irrigated, nor were fungicides used. The disease was evaluated Nov 1 by estimation of the percentage of turfgrass in each plot showing rust pustules. The weather during the weeks preceeding the evaluation was cool, overcast, and rainy. Inoculum was abundant and disease pressure was high. Leaves of highly susceptible cultivars turned yellow. A table provides % rust with significant differences indicated. Rust ranged from 2 to 85%. Elka, Tara, Gator, Pippin, and Ovatcon all had <5% rust while Cockade, Regal, and Lupido had >80% rust. |
