| Abstract/Contents: | Study to determine the effect of seeding depth and open grooves on establishment of tall fescue and perennial ryegrass. In order to mimic the firm seedbed encountered when renovating athletic turf, a sod cutter was used to remove Kentucky bluegrass sod from the test area. For the seed depth study, the sod cutter was then adjusted to cut through the soil at depths of 0.5, 1 and 2 inches deep. The loose soil was then removed, seed of Derby perennial ryegrass and Rebel tall fescue was seeded at 4 lb/1000 ft2, and the soil was re-scattered over the top to a specified depth. Percent ground cover on 5/20 and 6/31 is presented in a table. For both grasses, cover was best when seeded at 0.5 inches. For the open groove study, one-inch deep grooves were made into the firm soil by using a small hoe. Seed was then uniformly scattered along the groove and loose soil was used to cover the seed in only one of the treatments. The seed in the open groove and surface seed treatments remained uncovered. Percent established grass on 10/31 is provided in a table. Nno treatments had >45% establishment. For both grasses, establishment was best for the open groove treatments. These tests were initiated on April 30, 1985 and maintained at a one inch height. Irrigation and nitrogen were applied as needed during initial establishment. |
