Abstract/Contents: | Describes a study to compare the use of two different organic mulches, one made from recycled wood pallets and the other from composted yard trimmings. Results include that "both increased organic matter content of the soil relative to the bare soil control, with the yard trimmings compost having the most substantial effect" and "the rate at which nitrogen was released from decomposing organic matter...was much higher in plots mulched with composted yard trimmings than in the wood pallet treatment." Concludes that "composting them [yard trimmings] instead for use as mulch [rather than disposing of them] offers great potential for rehabilitating degraded soils, while diverting a valuable natural resource from landfills." |
