| Abstract/Contents: | Several commercially available and experimental herbicides were evaluated for preemergence control of smooth crabgrass. An established turf of Adelphi and Kenblue Kentucky bluegrass was chosen for this study. In early April the plot area was vertically mowed in order to expose some surface soil. Although this area was previously infested with crabgrass, it was again seeded with two pounds each of smooth crabgrass and goosegrass. The initial treatments were applied on April 19. The turf was mowed at a height of 1.5 inches and nitrogen was applied at 1 lb N/1000 ft2 in May and June. The 27 treatments with 3 replications were applied to 6' X 10' plots with 3' alleys between the replications. The goosegrass seed germinated late in the season and only then in the dead sod between each plot, so no ratings were taken for control of goosegrass. A table provides herbicides, formulation, application rates and timing, % crabgrass on 9/19 and 10/21, color on 5/6 and 6/18, and % broadleaf weeds on 6/18. Ronstar 50WP at 8 lb ai/A had worst color but gave best crabgrass and broadleaf weed control. Since there were no killing frosts in September or October, the October 31 evaluation indicates considerable recovery of the bluegrass during the cool season. |
