Abstract/Contents:Evaluated Triumph, Mocap, Turcam, Diazinon, and Oftanol for control of southern masked chafers in a Kentucky bluegrass plot in Fayette County, Kentucky. On 8 August, 84 6" X 6" turf/soil cores were removed from the plot and an 8" X 8" section of fiberglass window screen was placed over each hole. The turf/soil cores were fitted into 6 inch (diameter) X 7 inch (length) sections of PVC pipe so that the core bottom was flush with the bottom edge of the pipe. The pipe was then placed into the hole so that the screen covered the bottom of the pipe and soil. the plot was then irrigated for ca. two hours with a garden sprinkler. On 20 August, second and third instar southern masked chafer grubs were collected from soil in a neighboring, untreated golf course. Ten grubs were placed in each cylinder and allowed to dig into the soil. Grubs remaining on the surface after 30 minutes were replaced. The plot contained 6 replications of treatments arranged as a RCB. Insecticide treatments were applied to individual cylinders on 28 August. The granular formulations were mixed with a small amount of dry sand and hand shaken into the clinders. The liquid formulations were diluted to a total volume of 150 ml. and this solution was poured evenly within the cylinders. Treatments to be irrigated were watered with a hand sprinkler with ca. 1 inch of water. On 18 September the cylinders were removed from the ground and the soil cores within them were broken apart by hand and the number of surviving grubs was counted. Insecticides, forumulations, application rates and results are provided in a table. All treatments gave excellent control. The mean number of live grubs per cylinder ranged from 0.0 to 1.2 in the treatments, whereas the untreated cylinders had a mean of 7.5 living grubs."
