Abstract/Contents:Discusses the different types of aerification and their benefits as well as potential problems. Coring, shatter-coring, grooving, slicing, spicking, sub-aerification and forking are briefly covered. Positive factors include: alleviation of soil compaction; beneficial for overseeding and renovation; may reduce thatch accumulation; corrects layering; helps correct localized dry spots; improves fertilizer, lime and pesticide penetration; may promote new shoot growth from cut rhizomes and stolons; improves soil resiliency. Common problems and some solutions are: timing and choice of procedure; unnecessary cultivation; openings left which allow weed encroachment - particularly where Poa annua is present; soil surface left uneven on close-cut turf - topdressing can help; disturbing preemergence herbicide zones by grooving or coring several times on the same area; dessication which may be enchanced by late fall or summer cultivation, especially on close cut turf (irrigation will help reduce this problem).
