Abstract/Contents:"Two methods for measuring the infiltration rates of artificial turf were compared. In the first approach infiltration rates were measured using a double ring infiltrometer under a head of 30 mm of water. In the second method a drip-screen was used to produce simulated rainfall intensities of 100 mm h-1 and the infiltration rate was determined by subtracting the rate of removal of ponded water. Both methods gave reasonable agreements with large scale flood tests and observations on ponding under actual rain. The cylinder infiltrometer can, however, be inaccurate on surfaces with infiltartion rates <50 mm h-1 if a perfect seal on the surface is not obtained. The drip-screen type infiltrometer has a disadvantage that infilatration rates above 100 mm h-1 cannot be measured without modification to the drip intensity. If 100 mm h-1 is specified as a minimum requirement for infiltration rates on artificial turf the cylinder infiltrometer can be used as the test apparatus and this forms the basis of a test method being developed as a British Standard."
