| Abstract/Contents: | Profiles St. Augustinegrass, Stenotaphrum secundatum, a turfgrass that is "utilized throughout the southern United States for [its] climatic adaptation and [its] ability to tolerate full sun to moderate shade." Describes the southern chinch bug, Blissus insularis Barber, as "the plant's most damaging pest." States that its "ability to develop resistance to insecticides and overcome host plant resistance" make it particularly devastating to the plant. Discusses possible methods for preventing damage by the chinch bug and presents the materials and procedure for tests "conducted at the Everglades Research and Education Center at Belle Glade, Florida." Concludes that "the cylinder method of Crocker and Simpson (1981) showed similar insecticidal control...compared to plots in both granular and spray applications. In contrast, the potted plant method showed significantly higher chinch bug control than plots in spray applications." |
