Abstract/Contents: | Reports the results of turfgrass decompaction using "Terramat" equipment at three sports fields. Contains figures and charts detailing data and results for the different locations and soil types. The degree of compaction and loosening were measured via the resistance to penetration using a penetrometer. The results on the three different sports fields show loosening effects of up to 70%. Loosening work should be carried out during the growth period since this is especially favorable to the growth of roots. It is essential to seed following the use of the Terramat so that open spaces around the roots are covered. On sport field with man-made or artificial soils, the loosening should be repeated every two or three years, depending on the intensity of use. Conventional soil compositions need to be loosened yearly. By means of a controlled cam technique, the Terramat loosens areas of compaction up to a depth of 22 cm. Damage to the grass surface is avoided by using disk coulters. A roller is used to ensure an even surface. The primary effect of the Terramat is to loosen the vegetation layer. A secondary effect is to improve drainage. |
