| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses various ways of reducing roadside herbicide spraying. Suggests developing "a program that adequately addresses safety issues (like visibility), maintains adequate drainage, and creates aesthietically pleasing roadsides." Describes no spray zones for residents along country roads, allowing them to request that their roadsides are managed without herbicides. Disucsses implementing a notification program in which postings and public announcements are made at least one week prior to herbicide treatments. Presents steps to reduce or eliminate roadside herbicide applications, including finding out which government agency is responsible for managing roadsides in your community, learning about the current roadside vegetation management program and chemicals used and the health and environmental effects of using them and educating others about these effects. States that "gathering community support, researching health and environmewntal effects, demonstrating successful alternatives, and effectively lobbying decision-makers are important tools for making change." |
