Abstract/Contents:" 'Elka' and 'Derby' perennial rye grasses established faster, suppressed weeds more effectively, and tolerated orchard vehicle travel better than did 'Boreal', 'Fortress', and 'Ensylva' red fescue and 'Scaldis' hard fescue. The red fescues were similar in their rate of establishment, ground cover 1 year after planting, tolerance to vehicle travel, and suppression of weeds. Percent ground cover by red fescues 1 year after planting increased from 50% at the 11 kg/ha seeding rate to 70% for the 22 kg/ha seeding rate, but did not increase further when 45 kg/ha of seed were planted. The red fescues tolerated moderate amounts of orchard vehicle travel, but ground cover was reduced about 20% in wheel track areas. They suppressed annual weeds by 90%, dandelion (Taraxacum officinale L.) by 80%, Canada thistle [Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop.] by 65%, and field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis L.) by 30%. Scaldis hard fescue did not establish well and did not provide adequate ground cover even at the 45 kg/ha seeding rate. Furthermore, it did not tolerate orchard vehicle travel or suppress weeds. The ryegrasses established rapidly and had covered 85 to 90% of the area 1 year after seeding. Grand cover by ryegrasses was excellent for 11,22 and 45 kg/ha seeding rates. Orchard vehicle travel did not reduce ground cover. Both ryegrasses suppressed weeds well, but Derby grew tall and would require frequent mowings. Elka, a short turf-type ryegrass, suppressed annual weeds by nearly 100%, dandelion and Canada thistle by 95%, and field bindweed by 65%.
