Abstract/Contents:Profiles James Ernest "Ernie" Hayes, "recipient of the 2002 Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Carolinas GCSA." Describes Hayes' childhood, his first job as a caddie and his service in World War II. States that "in 1951 he joined the National Park Service where his beat was the Blue Ridge Parkway and surrounding national park lands. Ernie would spend 15 years as a park ranger, a job that kept him close to the land and just as close to the first tee at Blowing Rock. In his time he was arguably the best amateur in the mountains." Discusses the golf tournments Hayes won and his career as a golf course superintendent. States that "Ernie's `first' retirement lasted about an hour and a half before he joined son, Mike, then newly-appointed project manager in charge on construction and grow-in project at Blue Ridge Country Club near Linville Falls." Explains that "now at 80, Ernie joins the Land Harbor golf course maintenance crew many mornings, helping whenever called."
