Abstract/Contents:Nematodes reproduce by eggs which hatch into larvae. Larvae molt four times before reaching adult size. The lifecycle can be completed in 5 to 6 weeks and each female can produce hundreds of eggs. Pathogenic nematodes are obligate parasites which must feed on living tissues, and can attack a range of plant species. They can survive in frozen soils, living roots and in dead plant tissues. Turf areas damaged by nematodes do not respond readily to application of fertilizer or fungicides. If this situation occurs, a soil sample should be taken and analyzed for nematodes. The samples should be taken from the upper 3 to 6 inches in heavy soils, and 6 to 12 inches in sandy soils. Samples should also be taken from healthy turf to compare the number and species between areas. The best indication of a nematode problem is a positive response from a nematicide. Nematicides are highly toxic. Organophosphate derivatives, Nocap (ethoprop), Nemacur (fenamiphos), and Dasanit (fensulfothion) are available in granular form. Judicious irrigation, increasing the mowing height, and using a balanced fertilizer will help minimize injury. Sewage sludge can discourage high population development in some nematodes. Rates and comments of the Nematicides listed above are given in Table 1.
